With the XMTB Spring Series bike races starting yesterday (Sunday 27th), a couple of the Young Guns decided to give their cycling legs a rest and take to foot (or buggy!) the day before (Saturday 26th) – going for a wee adventure around Castleward in the Lagan Valley Orienteers (LVO) Spring Cup No2. There were three lengths of course available, with the Harrower brothers opting for the shortest course
Fraser had no option to enter solo, with little brother Alex in no mind to stand aside and watch – he had to have his own “dibber” on his finger to stick in (and beep!) the control points when found. While Alex started the course in the buggy, he was soon out of the buggy and running more often than not. Choosing his moments wisely! Like getting back in the buggy for the bumpy, uphills! Thanks Alex!
A little orienteering exposure last year during the Belfast Parks week and Fraser appeared to have a natural ability with a map. After being handed the map at the start on Saturday, he soon remembered some symbols and features, and knew how to set the map the right way. Hmmmmm, maybe a few of us girls could use him in the CCAR adventure race this weekend!
Alternating between a walk and a jog, Fraser found all 9 checkpoints in a time of 38 minutes. Both boys loved the event, sauntering and dashing along in the glorious sunshine and countryside. Alex particularly loved “dibbing” – so much so that just once at each checkpoint wasn’t enough! And needless to say they both loved the playpark afterwards!
Orienteering is a fab sport for all ages and abilities (or non-abilities!). Give it a go!
Ding Dong!

I think that this is really educative for them and I am sure that this is a nice way to spend your time.
