Velodrome World Cup: Thighs Of Steel, Calves Of ?!?!

It was all about the legs at the Track Cycling World Cup in the Manchester Velodrome at the weekend. Chris Hoy…..thighs…..need I say more?! But when it comes to Malaysian cyclist Awang, it was all about the calf muscle. For the faint hearted, do not look at the photo of the splinter?! he got after a crash in the men’s Keirin race.
Despite wiping out and being speared right through his calf, he managed to clamber back onto his bike and hobble over the line to finish third behind Hoy in 1st place and France's Gregory Bauge in 2nd. Now that’s the stuff of guts and determination!
The Velodrome had an electric atmosphere from the very first events on Friday morning, with British cycling very much at the top of the world stage.
While in awe of the big names such as Hoy, Wiggins, Pendleton and our own Houvenaghal and in wonderment at the tight formations in the team races, there was a little room left in the brain to imagine 4 bright pink kits flying around the track at an impressive?! rate. Yeah, about as fast as the AA battery powered Derny bike that leads the Kierin racers out!
