Three Peak Challenge !?!?

The Three peaks Challenge took place on Sunday 25th September with approx 50 riders gathering for a great days off road riding in the Gortin Glens...

In "true last minute belles style" Julie at 9.30pm on Saturday evening decided to pack up the Bikedock van and hit the road (not literally thankfully) and check out this event and some new off road territory . Sign on was at 9.15am just off the Gortin Road and the riders were welcomed by race organiser Paul Mc Menamin and his helpers who were on hand throughout the day. The course provided two options with riders being given the choice of riding either the two peak or three peak course... Being very tempted to settle for the two peak route which was considerably shorter, however not to be sniffed at, Julie decided that if she was going to make the effort to drive down the decision was an easy one... This "All Or Nothing" attitude will be the death of these belles!?!?  After making the top of the first peak there were probably quite a few riders wondering if the shorter course might have been the smarter choice.

 

Julie completed the gruelling course in about 4 and half hours and was buzzing at the finish line, there was a great mixture of single track, fire roads, tricky decents and endless climbing, at one point she couldn't help but wonder 'how did I ever complete 8 consecutive days of this in the Alps 2 months ago?!? Being the only female competitor she was suprisingly the 'first lady home' and was delighted to be welcomed back to the centre to be faced with another 'mountain' of sandwiches thankfully this time... The ladies had a great spread laid on for all of the competitors and supporters with hot soup to bring the body temperatures back to normal after numerous down pours throughout the day...

 

All in all this this was a fantastic day out and tested the limits for everyone invloved, lets hope next time around we can get a few more ladies to join in the 'fun'...  Gortin Glens is definitely well up there on Julie's  favourites list for mountain biking in Ireland, after Sunday we wonder will she remember the route to guide some of you girls around it soon... Of course she will!?!?
