With the summer 'all things adventure' calendars in full swing the annual Mourneway Marathon hosted by 26 Extreme was a perfect opportunity to hang up the bike shoes for a day (aherm ?!?!?) and dig out the trainers.
This event included a variety of distances, namely: Ultra Marathon, Marathon, Half Marathon, 10k and Challenge Walk giving everybody of every level an opportunity to explore the outstanding scenery and glorious trails and paths through the mournes. The route was entirely off road, traversing the foothills of the Mourne Mountains passing Tollymore Forest, Fofanny Dam, Spelga Dam, Leitrim Lodge and Yellow Water before arriving at the finish in Kilbroney Park in Rostrevor.
After a strict training regime (5 runs in 2 years!) Cathy decided this was a good opportunity to see if she could still make it through a 13 mile run and headed for rostrevor put her kilbroney biking demons to rest.
The half route started in Fofanny damn and took a 'slight' incline up Hen track and over Hen mountain before falling back onto the trails and into kilbroney forest (eventually!). Support and banter along the way was a given and cheering, water and mud was plentiful. Mountain running definitely fairs well to the old haggered knee and hip joints and it was nice to finish the run without then having to jump on a bike or throw yourself into a kayak. All in all a great event, spectacular scenery and fantastic organisation by the 26 Extreme guys.
Looking forward to the next one..........
