The 1st round of the Cyclocross series took place on Sunday at Lurgan Park, with 48 hours of heavy rain prior to the event meaning a real dirty weekend – with the kids.....and even moreso the big kids!....loving the mudfest !
Cyclocross is a bike discipline in its own right, but the main event is preceded by kids and adult MTB races on the course.
The U8s were first off and Young Guns leader Fraser Harrower (undeterred by being a roadie for the first time with his brand new road bike and debut spin!) relished the tough grassy course in the wet and mud.
He lead from the start of the 2-lap course and crossed the finish line comfortably in 1st place. Adam McCaughtry put in his usual solid performance to finish 4th. Both boys started fast at the whistle and fortunately managed to avoid a pile-up before the first bend – which saw Zak Tsoutsas sprawled in the mud with 3 others. However Zak showed the Young Guns spirit and picked himself up and completed the race. He ended in 14th position, just behind Christopher Duncan. (whose mummy wasn't even there to see his best finish after a late night out – so late, she hadn't even made it home on Sunday morning!!)
The U10s were next off and Ben Wilson had an intense battle for 3rd position, just missing out in a final sprint for the line. Ben has been catching the top 3 in recent races and looks set to get on that podium very soon! Sam Duncan also had his own close fought race and pipped Sarah Elder to the post.
In the U12s, Max Melville was out to continue to close contests that went on in this age group in the preceding series, and as always put in constant lap times. Max hasn't been on his MTB much and was happy with 5th position – giving him a target for the remaining 5 rounds of the Cyclocross series.
After the kids races, came the adult MTB race, with Young Guns and some parents staying on to lend their much welcomed support to belle Andrea. The course was a slog the whole way around, with 4 laps to complete, and requiring quite a lot of skill to stay on the bike even when going in a straight line. Andrea set off hard and found herself in the middle of the mixed group of 28 (including only 4 girls) – consoling herself with the fact that the extent of the mud splattering meant that it made no difference that she was wearing the white Dromara CC kit and not the pink Belles kit! Andrea finished 1st female and 13th of the 28 starters.
