It was Night Time orienteering in Belvoir Forest last night, otherwise known as LVO's WENT series. 3 of the Belles made it along to enjoy a run/walk/stumble around Belvoir, along with nearly 30 others.
With Andrea Belle not being present it meant there were 2 important things missing - no Andrea and no camera!
So keen are the Belles to kick start their New Year and get their mojos back on Belle form, we all actually arrived on time and Julie impressively even ran to the start.
It was a mass start at 7:30 with the format a 45 min score event, which means you collect as many cp's as possible in 45mins. The 1st few cp's were helped by the line of head torches, however once different route choices arose people began to spread out.
Orienteering is great fun in the dark. If you're thinking about trying it at all just come down & have a go. The format of the score events means people don't tend to be running around on their own, instead you are frequently running past each other and in our case numerous times and often in circles. There are plenty of friendly faces there to give advice and explain how to read the maps and understand all the other information on an orienteering sheet, with special mention to the Baxters who are so welcoming & enthusiastic to newbie orienteerers they should be cloned for every club!
Just make sure when you are about to start you're not standing beside Cathy Belle - who happened to mention that on the way over she heard on the car radio an escaped prisoner is on the loose in Belfast. Although, to be honest I think an escaped prisoner would be more frightened of us, our noisy chat & bright LED's
The next 2 WENT events are on 19th in Castlewellan & 2nd Feb in Hillsborough Park.
Then the WEE series kicks off again in the Spring, every Wednesday from the 4th May.
For other fixtures see the LVO website http://www.niorienteering.org.uk/lvo or why not join LVO and come along to the other training nights involving drills, circuits, running... tea, biscuits.
Having trouble remembering the orienteering symbols used on the control descriptions? - Philip Baxter suggested a great way to learn - an interactive quiz on the IOF site... http://www.fortnet.org/icd/
