Racing was the last thing Andrea felt like doing on Sunday morning but when Fraser commented that he’d like both of us to stand in 1st position on the podium, the decision was made. Reluctantly! Knowing that Fraser would give it his best shot, and keen to make up for last week’s bad taste!, Andrea put on the Ding Dong gear and got ready for battle. If she had been more prepared, she would not have arrived at Malone House with a) a puncture and b) white legs. Luckily with regard to a), there were a couple of Monthlies on hand that had attended the recent puncture repair course at Bikedock. Not! Luckily with regard to b), legs would be completely brown after 10 secs racing through the mud. (although it has to be said that the spectator’s comment about the lack of tan did strike a chord. mental note to self……get the Dove Summerglow out).
Having run about after the Young Guns in their races (see the report about their great performances published just prior to this one), Andrea should have felt well warmed up and raring to go. Ahem, far from it. And once again she had not reccy’d the course, but with 7 laps to do she had plenty of time to get to know it. And would be bored by lap 3!
The MTB race (for those that can’t afford to buy a Cyclo-Cross specific bike!) started at 1130am and Andrea immediately got into a position on the back wheel of Claire Oakley, XMTB McConvey Cycles. The lap started with a grassy downhill and a few muddy, slippery turns, before heading through a mudbath and up a short sharp grassy, slippery climb – where Andrea’s adventure racing technique of running/pushing your bike came into play. There was then a short flat section, which provided no relief because the terrain was soft/slushy, before a long uphill drag that took the course through a tree section and then along a flat, leg ripping grass section to the end of the lap.
Right at the start of the 2nd lap Andrea pedalled past Claire, got her race face on, and ground it out on the challenging course. By the end of the 2nd lap she was 30 secs ahead of Claire and by the end of the 3rd lap about 90 secs ahead. Claire pulled out from the 4th lap, while Andrea continued strongly to finish as 1st female and 9th overall out of 20 starters.
Fraser had cheered his mummy the whole way and was chuffed that for the first time it was a Harrower double…..”Mummy and Son No.1” !
Ding Dong!
