Andrea was once again not really up for racing on Sunday morning at the Cyclo-Cross at Ormeau Park. It seems to be a running theme, this not feeling like racing! This week there was the added extra of a girls’ weekend in Sligo, with a late night on Friday, an extremely late night (early morning!) on Saturday, and after a brief stint in bed a 630am start on Sunday to drive back from Sligo in time for the race. Not the ideal preparation, but then are we ever prepared?!
Hmmm, preparation in the form of taking on enough fluids?….except they weren’t the right sort! Hmmm, and preparation in the form of addressing the white legs of last week?….except the Dove came out at an inappropriate time over the weekend and the result was not a sunkissed look, but rather a streaky one!
Having run about after the Young Guns in their races with her legs covered!, Andrea took the long covering off and started at 1130am in the hope that her legs (the colour of them that is!) would distract the male competitors. Unfortunately they were too intent on racing the first corner, and Andrea soon found that it was her elbows that were required, not her legs!
Monthlies Irvine and Stack had arrived at Ormeau to support Andrea. Just how supportive their comments were is open to debate! “Go streaky” and “watch the tree” were but two of the shouts at the start of the first of 7 laps! Joke. It was great to have the girls there, it really gives a wee boost at the start of every lap.
The Ormeau Park course was technical and challenging, through trees and over roots and up slippery slopes and down muddy descents. But it was very enjoyable as it turned out!
Andrea got off to a strong start and headed the female contingent from the beginning, extending her lead with every lap, as well as holding her own against the male riders. When she crossed the finish line she was 1st female (after Fraser’s earlier win meaning a Harrower Double for the 2nd week in a row) and 10th overall out of a list of 21 starters.
Not bad for being worse for wear!
Ding Dong!

I am glad to hear this good news and I just hope that for the future the things will also go in this direction.
