Achill : A Sound Place To Go !

The Melville Young Guns packed up their bikes and headed for Achill Island - covering many miles in the sunshine, and devouring lots of picnics!
It's about 5 hours drive (why didn't mummy Melville pedal there?!) to Co. Mayo. Joined to the mainland by a bridge at Achill Sound, the Island is so easily accessible. Fabulous scenery, great for outdoor activities and super Guiness (hmmmm, a running thread from the Dromara Coastal?!) to round off the day.
Achill is all about being outside and is the perfect spot to cycle, walk, run whatever distance suits you along the Atlanic Drive. Then there's the water - great for Triathlon training!!, but also bodyboard, surf, kitesurf, kayak - along sandy beaches at Keel, Dugort or Keem Bay. Inland there are the peat bog tracks, and beautiful Slievemore Mountain.
The island is thriving with well organised events ranging from road runs to adventure races. Keep up to date on the Belles site.
Aside from a stunning road and mountain bike location, this is also perfect for the family given a new 18km cycle track along a disused railway line from Newport to Achill Sound. Funding has been given to take this the whole way to Achill - Yipee!
So, why wouldn't you go to Achill?!
