There has been a little bit of preparation in the past 10 days – intense training has involved walking 1 mile on the road barefoot! Just the once! Other activities have been rubbing surgical spirit into feet, wandering aimlessly around the supermarket looking for race food and buying a load of rubbish, and purchasing new kit (remember that old tip "don't try anything new in a race" – well, we haven't heeded that again – although at least the new bike has been ridden. Once!).

There is a 25 kg weight limit each for the actual kit bags, so packing will take on military proportions in the next 24 hours. Or more likely in 24 hours time!

Long range weather forecasts are being watched. The Ding Dong bikinis are on the side in case there is a significant change in the weather models. And the models themselves! The fear is that if the girls produce their bikinis, then Ivan will produce his see-through lycras. Never mind the girls, Steve couldn't handle it again after Bristol rat race!

This final countdown may sound amusing, but believe us it goes against what we're actually feeling. Tension and nerves are high. This is a mammoth challenge for the team. But fear is good?!
