Lakeland Hill By Tandem = Ain’t No Mountain!

There is just no excuse not to pedal. Ever! So you have a broken hand.....well just pedal on the back of a tandem using one hand to balance. Like I said, no excuses! So Andrea's trusting (foolish?!) best friend Jen, who has her left hand in plastercast, hopped on the back of a tandem kindly provided by Dromara CC. After an easy warm up, involving a 10 mile round trip along country roads with 3 kids (2 of the Belles wannabe Young Guns!) and ice cream shop halfway, Jen was even coaxed into tackling the infamous Lakeland Hill.

Lakeland has been the undoing of many cyclists, a short steep hill with a severe gradient at the midpoint. Sure, one of our other Monthly cyclists Karen had a bad fall off a few weeks ago there. Jen was a bit nervous (funny that!) ahead of the hill and on numerous occasions argued that we shouldn't attempt it, saying she hadn't cycled since Maracycle and reiterating that she only had one hand to balance on and get enough leg strength. Andrea was having none of it and, knowing Jen's ability better than herself, the pair took on Lakeland in style. Woo hoo'ing all the way. Well, once we got some breath!

Lakeland on a tandem with a broken hand. There can't be many girls boasting this?!

And who can also boast about their kids too. What a fab cycle they did, with Olivia having an indepth lesson in gears and getting to grips with them in style befitting of a Belle in waiting! Yes girls, the 4 Belles won't be the cover shots for more than maybe 10 years (we're not aging too well already!!) - so we're targeting 4 young recruits to take over the Belles' mantle. Olivia is in the wings for Andrea, Emer for Julie....so who is up for being Taryn and Cathy. Can't blame anyone if they don't fancy it - those two aren't much to live up to !!!

As for boys side of the Young Guns, Charlie is well up for the label - although it may be edited to Young Machine Gun for him!

Bikes, bikes, bikes - one of the original Young Guns Adam McCaughtry (son of Monthly Gillian) has also become increasingly interested in the 2-wheeled vehicle and is fresh from the trails in Canada, ready and willing to move his way up the ranks in the next round of the XC MTB Under8 race.

Young Guns Max and Emer Melville have also been getting the miles in, eating up the tramways in Cornwall with lots of pedalling - and then eating up all around then in the tea rooms afterwards. Oh and rubbing shoulders with famous Olympic cyclists. Well, nearly!

A great summer of cycling from the Monthlies and Monthlies & Kids. Keep those wheels spinning!

Ding Dong!
